One of my all time favorite comic strips is D.C. Simpsons’ OZY and MILLIE. I really feel that it combines the best in lush but reserved illustration with heartfelt storytelling combined with subtle satire. It’s a wonderful blend of Bill Watterson’s CALVIN and HOBBES and Walt Kelly’s POGO.
A few months back, D.C. announced that after 11 years, the regular adventures of Ozy and Millie would be coming to an end at the end of this year, and that final story line is playing out right now with the wedding of titular characters respective parents, thus rendering Ozy and Millie step-siblings. To mark the occasion, I decided to put together the above illustration as a kind-of wedding present to Llewellyn and Mililani Mudd. Now, I waited until the actual wedding was HAPPENING so that I could accurately show the characters in their correct outfits in my piece, but eventually decided to draw Ozy in a more traditional tux rather than the Dragon attire he’s ACTUALLY wearing to the wedding. What can I say, I really wanted to draw the top hat.
That all said, if you’ve never read OZY and MILLIE, I highly recommend that you do so. You won’t be dissapointed.
