When working on this one, I just needed SOMETHING for Pumpkin to pretend to be allergic to, and the back of my can of Diet Dr. Pepper provided “Aspartame”.
It seemed like a bizarre enough thing to be allergic to. I just wanted something more exotic sounding than “Peanuts” or something.

Okay… to be truthful here… while I DID recieve a lot of info about the artificial sweetener, Aspartame, (Including testimonials from those that ARE allergic to it.) I was hardly flooded with negative mail. This was honestly more inspired by the anger that Scott Kurtz inspired with his Lupus joke a few weeks back. When I noticed that I was getting a lot of feedback about Aspartame, this joke just seemed like a natural.
That said, I wish I had more panels so I could have had “me” say, “Now I know… and knowing is half the battle!”
