Running Commentary

While I do plenty of exposition strips, I rarely do flashbacks, so this should be fun. Since the flashback in and of itself may not always be a laugh ROIT, though, I think it best to let Dandy put his two cents in as he sees fit.

For you continuity lovers out there, (Or just those of you new to the strip.) the period of time that’s being referred to by Snuffles happened right after THESE Strips. While Snuffles makes the general “A couple of years back.” comment, I really can’t believe it’s been nearly 4 years since that story. My, how time flies.

A match made in Prison

I wouldn’t have done this kind of series of jokes even last year. Humor that centers around one of the characters literally getting drunk would have made me way to uncomfortable to pull off within the confines of a strip I consider “All ages”. But after a bit of consideration of not only to massive ammount of older cartoons I grew up on featuring cartoons getting blitzed (DUMBO for example.) but the context of WHO is getting drunk and decided to go with it. I felt that using a character that is largely an antagonist to tell these jokes made it a LITTLE safer.

But what it really comes down to, is my desire to push against my own, self-imposed rules and see how far i can take the strip without becoming overly vulgar and completely NON family friendly. That said, there is a LOT of humor at the expense of a Hangover to be had.

On a side note, I’m fully aware of the concept of “drunk tanks” for all-too human folks who have had a bit too much to drink. And this comment by Snuffles was intended to showcase his attitude towards humans. Like most anyone with a powerful prejudice, Snuffles tends to see societies FAVOR toward those he hates and oppression towards himself or the group he identifies with.

Fast Forward

THIS was a tricky strip to work out. SHOULD I show them making out in the last panel or should I cut to Snuffles TELLING Dandy that they made out, and focus on Dandy’s expression. I decided to not break the flow of the flashback and show it.

Kool-Aid and the gang

This strip is HEAVY on the exposition, and light on the humor, but there’s a lot of backstory to establish regarding Calpurnia and Snuffles’ relationship here.
