Back to Basics

Last month, I talked a little bit about trying to go “back to basics” regarding the production of the strip. I’ve been drawing “Dandy & Co.” in Photoshop since the first strip premiered online just a hair over 5 years ago, and was thinking about changing things up and going back to good ol’ pen and paper. THIS strip is my first attempt at that and BOY does it show. It pretty much looks like a normal strip with slightly thinner linework, a bit more crosshatching on the black areas and… as Bernard points out… HORRIBLE hand lettering. I am WAY out of practice.

I’ll certainly be doing more ink-on-paper comics in the future, but tomorrow, things WILL be back to normal.

This one was a little tricky, since there was just NO other term I could think of for what Dandy uses to describe himelf except for what I’m clearly alluding to here. BUT, the word in question is on my personal list of words NOT to use in the strip.

Rather than chose a watered down replacement term, I decided to use the good ol’ fashioned $#@. I think the joke still works.

The EYE has it.

Today’s strip is inspired by a weird little thing that happened to me back in my senior year at high school. I was working at a comic shop and everyone at the store was dressing up to work the shop on Halloween. I put together a particularly creepy grim reaper outfit. Well, I was putting the mask on and fixing my theatrical make up in the bathroom when the bosses young daughter came up behind me to ask what I was dressed as. Without thinking about what I LOOKED like, I turned around ever-so-casually to TELL her.

Of course, she responded appropriately, screamed in stark terror and ran out of the shop and about 3 blocks away before my boss caught up with her. I was SO sure that she was gonna run into traffic and kill herself over my outfit… which filled me with a bizarre mix of terror and pride. Anywho, it seemed like a good twist for a strip.

Also, I should note that today’s strip actually takes place in continuity BEFORE Manny’s “WereBoy” short story in the archives, as will Monday’s strip. Once actual Halloween has passed, the strip will move past that storyline.

This is, in fact, one of those sadly autobiographical strips. I do this pretty much EVERY freakin’ year. I start out with over-ambitious plans to create a costume that would have Rick Baker scratching his head and end up settling for something CONSIDERABLY more mundane.

This year, I struck OUT for the mundane with a “Charlie Brown” costume but was STILL stalling until the last minute.
