This story line, and the return of Pumpkin in general, were inspired by an episode of the BBC show, Linda Green. In one episode, the titular character found herself drawn in to a newfound appreciation for activism when she gets arrested at a protest and makes friends with one of the protesters.
I had wanted to bring Pumpkin back into the strip as a girlfriend for Maryweather around midway through Beanie-Quest II, and the idea of expanding her role of a dog-activist was a natural.
